Leland Blue and Petoskey Stone Stick Necklace
Three Beautiful pieces of Leland Blue/green and two pieces of Petoskey stone hang from sterling silver sticks on an 18inch oxidized chain. This is a great statement piece. The sticks are adorned by silver dots and are 2 1/2 inches long.
Leland Blue is a blue or green looking stone that is not actually a stone- it’s called slag in Northern Michigan
Slag is a waste product from the smelting process used in the late 1800s by the Lake Superior Iron Company.
The slag that formed Leland Blue, is obviously blue in color, but can be darker, lighter, or different shades of blue/green.
A Petoskey Stone which is from fossilized coral from about 350 million years ago.
Petoskey stones are a result of glaciation where the ice sheets plucked the stones from the bedrock and ground off the rough edges.
They were then deposited in Michigan’s upper and northwestern peninsula.
Petoskey Stones exhibit the distinct mottled patterns of the coral fossils.
The word Petoskey is a Native American Indian word that means ‘Rays of the Living Sun’.
In 1965 the Petoskey Stone was named the state stone of Michigan .
This necklace is one of my favs!
